Bringing innovation and diversity together for a brighter future

Tuatahi First Fibre welcomed nine students and two teachers from Te Kuiti High School for ShadowTech Day a TechWomen initiative.

This is the second year Tuatahi has participated in the event, which aims to encourage more young women to explore the world of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). The students, all in years 9 to 11, spent the day immersed in learning about fibre technology and telecommunications.

Throughout the day, the students participated in activities that showcased the exciting world of tech, including hands-on demonstrations and a sneak peek inside a roadside fibre cabinet. There were plenty of opportunities for interaction, with an engaging Q&A session where students could ask the Tuatahi team about their roles.

Tuatahi Digital Platforms Product Owner Lavinia Raj commented on the transformation she witnessed during the day. "It was great to see a group of students who, at the beginning of the day, were more reserved. By the end, they were really engaging, asking lots of questions, and showing a genuine interest in what we do. That’s what ShadowTech Day is all about – getting these young minds to see the possibilities."

The students’ feedback reflected a positive experience, with many highlighting the welcoming atmosphere, the knowledge they gained, and even the food! One student shared, “I enjoyed having conversations with tech workers and learning a lot from them.” Another commented on the opportunity to explore new areas of technology, saying, “I liked the fact that everyone got to see other choices in technology and digital.”

“We were honoured to participate in the ShadowTech initiative and to introduce these bright young women to the vast opportunities that careers within technology and telecommunications can offer,” said Nick Ollington, Tuatahi Chief People and Sustainability Officer. “Diversity fuels innovation, and by encouraging more women to explore and pursue careers in STEM fields, we can help build a more vibrant, dynamic future for the industry and beyond."

The partnership between Tuatahi and TechWomen underscores a shared commitment to shaping a more diverse and forward-thinking workforce. Through initiatives like ShadowTech Day, our sponsorship of TechWomen seeks to bridge the gender gap in STEM and empower the next generation of female leaders to shape the technological landscape.
