To connect apartments, units or properties in a shared driveway to our fibre network, we have to do some build work in areas that are shared by multiple residents. We need to notify your neighbours of this planned work and, in some instances, we may need them to give consent before getting started.

Step 1: Order your fibre broadband service

When you order fibre broadband from a Retail Service Provider, they become your first point of contact, and are responsible for assisting you with any issues you might have with your fibre broadband service or equipment. They will contact us on your behalf if necessary.

UFF’s responsibility to you is in relation to the equipment and fibre cables we install inside and outside your property boundary.

It is your responsibility to confirm with your Retail Service Provider if there are any other telecommunications related services connected to your property (e.g. monitored alarms, medic alarms, SKY TV, EFTPOS). This is to make sure those services will continue to work after your new fibre broadband service is connected.

UFF’s cables will remain in place and available to use, unless you or your telecommunications provider ask us to remove it (which will be at your cost).

Step 2: Obtaining Permission / Consent

When installing fibre in shared driveways and multi-dwelling units, we will assess what needs to be done in the driveway or building to deliver fibre. We will then allocate the work into one of three categories and follow the process set out in the Telecommunications Act for the relevant category.


The work we do will fall into one of three categories depending on the impact it has on the surrounding property. If you or one of your neighbours has ordered fibre, you should have received a letter detailing the work we need to do in your building or shared driveway, including which category that work is classed as. Categories are as follows;

Category 1

Low Impact communal work 

Installation will have a minimal lasting effect on your property or shared area. We will give you at least five working days’ notice before we get started. The build work will take place within 3-6 weeks after notification letters have been sent out.

Category 2

Medium Impact communal work 

The work we need to do may have some physical impact on the shared areas of your property. We will give you at least fifteen working days’ notice before we can get started. In some instances, you can lodge an objection. The build work will take place within 3-6 weeks after notification letters have been sent out.

Category 3

High Impact communal work 

The build methods used could have a greater impact on the shared areas of your property. We need consent before we can get started. Our consenting team will look to gain those consents for the build work.

Step 3: Scoping, Building & Installation

Each home, apartment building, retirement village and office block is different.  Where possible, we will try and use existing ducts to feed our cables into the building. 

In some cases, with permission, we may be able to use your building’s existing infrastructure, which we will discuss during the scoping visit.

If your connection request is in a multi-dwelling building (like an office block or apartment building) we will also need to get design consent from the building owner before any work commences.

While all the technical work is taking place, you will notice vehicles, equipment and people working in and around your building or property. We apologise in advance for any inconvenience and really appreciate your patience. Rest assured, we will always try to keep disruption to a minimum.

Step 4: Connecting your home or business

Once we have installed the fibre cables up to your property, we will send out our technicians to install cables and equipment inside your property. 

Once that is done, you can start enjoying the amazing benefits of broadband fibre.

If you live on a ROW or shared driveway, after your fibre broadband is installed your neighbours can also place an order with a broadband provider at any time.

The great news is that if your neighbour has previously given consent and we have completed the work in the shared accessway, then we do not need them or you to sign another consent form.
